Spiritual Maturity

4th Session: Spiritual Maturity

Music Controls/Regulates the Soul.

1 Sam 16:16 Let our lord now command thy servants, [which are] before thee, to seek out a man, [who is] a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

Music has a Spirit. John 663

1 Sam 16:23 And it came to pass, when the [evil] spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

2 Kings 3:15 But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him.

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, [they] are spirit, and [they] are life.

Some of us would have said, while others asserted that the Spirit of the Lord was not in full operation within the Old Testament Dispensation, yet, it is conspicuous that David enjoyed Supernatural backing and within his time because he clearly understood the power behind music and enquiry in every of its form; remember he was skilled.

Every Chord applied has an emotional feel and spirit attached to it both hearers and players of the same. Consequently ignorance of this affects every player in Touch, Tone, Spirit and Speed of play. However, mastery puts the control of both the Song and the Spirit of the audience under the Power of the player.

This doesn’t just involve mere rehearsals, but paying keen attention to every note of the chord applied and the passage played. The mindset of the player and mood of his spirit is often betrayed the combination of notes sounded and the manner in which they are played.

Most songs have an indifferent mood when major chords are applied all through but mood changes when Minor Chords are applied. A study of most love songs or very emotional singing/ playing is dominated these minor notes and chords.

This simple but complex concept was first taught me the Holy Spirit as I learnt playing Piano without a physical teacher but the Voice of the Holy Spirit speaking to me often at rehearsals during the night seasons when everyone and everywhere seemed quiet except me, my piano and the Holy Spirit. I would hear His voice often saying “Just hold that chord and think about it” and after a while He’ll instruct me to change only a note in the chord and undergo the same process again. Immediately I do, the feeling would either heighten or diminish. While I kept meditating on them at points like that, I would naturally begin to connect with certain moods and thought patterns, then feel an awe of His presence; though I never understood it then.

Much later as this continued as I began to play those chords during public and corporate worship. People often came to me to ask what I did during my play that made it different from a lot others they have ever heard.

Eph 5:18 mentions not being filled with wine wherein it’s excess but with the spirit.

Then Eph 5:19 speaks on the steps to build that spirit musically that can take you to that realm

PSALMS: songs done Old Testament Patriarchs in the Bible, especially the ones compiled in the book of Psalms.

HYMNS: Songs done early Christians based on their faith in God, concerning a situation {Learning Experience} in their life. They are written in Stanzas, Verses, Choruses with the same progression but each stanza/ verse contains a new learning experience that still points back to the chorus as being true in all.

SPIRITUAL SONGS: Spiritual songs are songs birthed the Spirit; they well up from your sub-conscious being and dominates a particular season of your life. They are sub-divided into:

  • Song of the Spirit– these are songs done spontaneously. They usually well up from your spirit, foretelling and fortifying your spirit on a particular learning experience you are about to enter into subconsciously but has been fore known your inner spirit.

  • Song for the Spirit– Songs done to relieve yourself of the particular storm that hit your life and leaves your spirit cast down. They are meant to build up your spirit back again after the storm.

SINGING: This is doing currently existing songs your contemporaries in faith.

MELODIES IN YOUR HEART: This is creating songs on events of your life that come as trying/ challenging or very good times in your heart but giving glory to God, rather than just speaking them in prayers, sing them melodiously.

Jude 20 mentions building up your faith ‘Praying in the Spirit’ while 1Cor 14:15 speaks on combining both Praying and Singing in the understanding and Spirit also.

A potent way of developing your spirit behind every song is to play the song in repeated mode and keep praying in the Spirit while it plays.

Take a break every once in a long while to pray some phrases of the song in your understanding, then switch back into the Spirit and keep building.

There are different levels of grace when you get there, but you will sure know when you start ascending each level.

Note:

A close study/ observation of An Alcoholic under the influence and a person filled with the Spirit are very similar but the aftermath and effect on the recipient are way incomprehensible.
