1st Session:

Gifts, Talents & Skill…

Gifts: Eph 4:12-16, 1Cor 4:7

Eph 4:11  And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

Purpose: (Eph 4:12)

  1. For the perfecting of the saints.

  2. For the work of the ministry.

  3. For the edifying of the body of Christ:

Duration of Gift: (Eph 4:13)

  1. Till we all come in the unity of the faith,

  2. And of the knowledge of the Son of God,

  3. Unto a perfect man,

  4. Unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Fulfillment: (Eph 4:14-15)

  • That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine,

  • Conquering the sleight of men, and

  • Overcoming cunning craftiness, wherethey lie in wait to deceive;

  • Speaking the truth in love,

  • Growing up into Him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

  • From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by.

  • Every joint supplieth (must yeild) according to the effectual working in the measure of every part.

  • Maketh increase of the body unto the edifying (profiting) of itself in love.

Gifts are given to all men God, as Jesus tells it in “Matthew 25:14-15 For [the kingdom of heaven is] as a man travelling into a far country, [who] called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey”.

1Co 4:7  For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?

A gift is what someone worked for or owns but is given to another person Free of Charge with the intent of accomplishing a purpose and reciprocating the same or even more to others the recipient.

  • A gift can be an answer to another person’s prayer/ request.

Num_18:6  And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel: to you they are given as a gift for the LORD, to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

  • The Value of a gift is as placed the giver:

Pro_17:8  A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

  • The Purpose for giving a gift is often defined the giver:

Eph 4:12

  • Your gift is what has the tendency of making you great:

Pro_18:16  A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.

Pro_22:29  Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.

  • A gift given to a graced person can transfer that grace to the giver:

Eze_46:16  Thus saith the Lord GOD; If the prince give a gift unto any of his sons, the inheritance thereof shall be his sons’; it shall be their possession inheritance.

  • A gift is a product of sacrifice from the giver:

Mat_23:19  Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

  • Some gifts are spiritually imparted:

2Ti 1:6  Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee the putting on of my hands.

  • Some gifts can be spoken into another person’s life:

1Ti 4:14 …which was given thee prophecy…

  • Other gifts can be placed in someone and sent your way:

John_4:10  Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

  • Gifts can change the outcome of an event/ case:

Exo_23:8  And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.

Deu_16:19  Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.

Pro_17:23  A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.

  • Gifts can either be accepted and used or neglected:

1Ti 4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee…

The show of an acceptance of any gift is in its use. Only used gifts that profit the user materially are referred to as   Talents. This Apostle Paul made clear in (1 Tim 4:14-15), while the talents that become trained to know the when, why, where, how and opportunities are called skill.

Talents: 1Tim 4:14-15, Matt 25:14-30

Used gifts to benefit the one who received it and the others around is referred to as talent. Every talent is expected to yield more. No one is said to be talented until they are able to accomplish some extraordinary things with their received gift. Consequently, a gift put into use is talent.

Apostle Paul encouraged Timothy never to neglect the gift that was in him

1Ti 4:14-15  Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

  • Every gift (talent) is expected to profit the bearer and should be evident to everyone.

1Tim 4:15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

  • Every man’s talent is according to his ability:

Matt 25:15  And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.

  • Every talent is expected to yield at least 100%:

Mat 25:16-17  Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.  And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.

  • Negligence of one’s talent can make the bearer go to hell:

Mat 25:25-30  And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  • Every judiciously used talent gives the user access to more:

Mat 25:20-21  And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou delivered unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

Skill: Dan 1:17, 2Chron 34:12,

The talents that become trained to know the when, why, where, how and opportunities are called skill.

Skillful people work less and earn more.

On every building site, there are various categories of workmen. The ones that are most hard-working are referred to as Service and paid the least. Yet they are tasked with transferring the blocks to the place of use, fetching the water, mixing the cement and trans-loading it to wherever the bricklayer wants it to be. The next to them are Bricklayers who are usually paid twice what the servers earn daily.  The Site Supervisors do little or nothing but count the number of blocks used or bags of cement exhausted on the work per day before paying the workers. Yet they receive almost the total amount that the masons and servers earn put together for one day. The Civil Engineers are the most benefited on every building site. They visit the site once in a season and vet all what has been done the Servers, Bricklayers and Site Supervisors for the period; judging the quality of materials used, they could even order pulling down the structure when they spot inferior materials used in the course of work. At one simple command, all what had been put together can be brought to nought. Yet that one day can earn them almost everything that the others workers have earned on the site put together.

This is similar to what happens in every singing group from the rehearsals till the performance Only efficiency pays and not activity. Skillful people work less and earn more. That’s why some persons may not be around all the time yet whenever they show up, they are highly esteemed over others because of what they can make happen within the shortest time they spend there. Stop beefing them cos’ THAT’s their EFFICIENCY SPEAKING. Learn and Train to be efficient this 2018, BE SKILLED!!!

There are times you have multiple Gifts which you have turned into talents and trained to become Skill. Don’t get it twisted, certain gifts are there to complement the other and they all work together to create a unique personality that you are, so do not despise any of your gifts. They always have their day of showing forth and saving you from all the other people who are regarded as ordinary and among the lots. Learn to always fan every gift into talent and train that talent into becoming a Skill…
