Financial Discrimination Among Singers & Musicians

Should a Gospel Music Minister collect money for his outings or state a bill before going to minister???

In 1 Tim 4:14-15 Apostle Paul taught that the gift that is got through laying on of hand is for thy profiting that may appear to all; only when it is meditated upon and given the time it requires for training and development. How much of profiting will therefore be required from a gift that has been trained to a well-developed stage without the input of the church/ ministry in the developmental process and financing?

Minister’s/ Minstrel’s Remuneration.

This has been a dicey area in the church ministry and administration. Most senior ministers see it as rebellion/ ingratitude to God the giver of these gifts when this is raised as an issue while the minstrels often perceive it as great injustice and devalue to their ministry when it is not handled.

God instructed in Mal 3:10 that the tithes be brought so that there may be meat in His house, then He will open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing that there won’t be enough room to contain it. These tithes were meant for the upkeep of Levites who were expected to encamp around the Tabernacle of Testimonies all the days of their lives.

My pastor, Pastor DavidJoseph IKECHUKWU taught me about the principle of God’s 3Gs. That there are 3 Gs of God that you mustn’t toil with if we must be successful in Ministry. These are GOD’s Gold, GOD’s Girls/ Guys and GOD’s Glory.

My mentor warned me against the 3 Sinkers & Tragic flaws being Pride, Love for money and Sexual sin. This made me run from and rejected any form of gratification from anyone I became Music Ministry of service to for fear of missing it.

When Apostle Godwin OJUH (G.O of Life Renewal Ministries) reported me to my District Overseer that I refused accepting  honorarium (money) or even transport fare from his ministry I was training and helping in building the Choir Unit (Renewal Voice of Life Renewal Ministries), my Reverend, Rev. A. A. Ahamisi of blessed memory who happened to be the Apostle’s intimate friend, had to teach me about accepting honorarium with insights from

Mat_10:41  He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.

That the purpose for accepting honorarium from people is that the grace in operation upon your life and the blessings you came there with might stay with the people after you have left the place. However, the blessings that reside with them is dependent on what the classified you as unto them and honored you accordingly.

Please understand that ‘The greatest challenges and distractions facing Music ministers comes from the occupation they get involved with outside the Music Ministry’ because they want to make ends meet, cater for their needs and stay responsible in the society. Whereas, God has instructed the Levites not to be engaged in menial jobs outside camping around the temple and ministering to it(Num 1:47-54). Tithe was therefore mentioned to the other tribes specifically as meant to meet the Levites’ needs. While Levites would tithe from all what have been brought to the temple for God through them. The Levites’ tithes were referred to as ‘Tithe of tithes” unto God (Num 18”26, Neh 10”28).

Thus is the tithe of the tithe meant for the priests over you. For indebt study on the swift transformation in Priesthood and the Laws of the old Testament, study Hebrews chapters 7-9.

There, the book of Hebrews handles the issue on tithe thus:

Hebrews 7:5

And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:”

Several Ministries, use these tithes as part of the running cost for the church and send a part to the Resident Pastor (High/ Officiating Priest) of the Branch, Station or Parish who is expected to administer and expend judiciously. This is up to the minister in Charge (High Priest) to extend it to the choristers who are referred to as Chief Musicians, Instrumentalists and Singers among the Levites.

The abuse of any of the above order is not to be fought out the deprived but God Himself as Apostle Paul had already forewarned against this in 1Cor. 9:15 that “…no man should make our glorying void” and in verse 18 thus:

1Co 9:18  What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.

Outside Ministration:

There has been several contentions arising from whether a minister is expected to be given or demand money when they go out for invites to minister. The main scripture a lot people use is the same 1Cor. 9:18 where Paul mentioned that he’ll rather do it for free. But please be mindful of the following in the context used:

  • It was Apostle Paul’s congregation.
  • It was right for him to take it but he chose to let ii go.

On what Priests/ Levites should take during an outing where they’re expected to carry out their spiritual function, it was spelt out in 1Sam 2:

1Sa 2:13-16  And the priests’ custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand; And he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither. Also before they burnt the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw. And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it force.

Of course, the Ministry is expected to invite Minstrels that their financial capacity can carry per time and communicate same to the minstrel while the negotiations for being at the concert is still at its planning phase (Luke 14:28-30). On the other hand, the Music Minister is expected to accept what budget they make awaiting him/ her, but where they refuse to disclose it and demands that the Minstrel should come for the concert and would be compensated afterwards, then the Minstrel can bill whatever he/ she so desires and can get it force (legally) when resisted or swindled.

Eli’s children were indiscipline and destroyed because they would always demand the part they wanted from the sacrifice that the people rendered unto God 1Sam 2:12-17.

I was at a concert where the agreed honorarium for a Guest Music Minister was not paid in full and was only made to know that the balance was not available after he was through ministering, while his team was waiting for him to return home with them together. What embarrassment would it lead if they never had an arrangement for fare from there? The minister maturely took his team back home but promised to come for his balance during the next service with law enforcement agents if he’s not been paid in full before then. Please lets ensure we do not make jest of God’s vessels our lackadaisical attitudes anytime anywhere.
